
Your company can reap a huge return on investment for providing an effective employee wellness program. Corporate stats prove for every dollar invested on an employee health program, the returns have boasted cost savings of between $2.30 and $10.10 in the areas of lowered absenteeism, fewer sick days, reduced benefits claims, lowered health and insurance costs, and lowered presenteeism. Presenteeism -When your employee is physically there at work but not really there? The employee is working under a diminished capacity as a result of a physical or emotional illness. A Cornell University study showed that each “sick” employee that comes to work costs the company over $250/year - this number does not even include passing on the cold or flu bug, just the lack of productivity and motivation...which is even more highly contagious.
We are so blessed to live and work in Toronto the beautiful, but as with everything in life worth working for, there are pros and cons. We are all wading through the pressure cooker. 1) Assess - Don’t let some executive wellness company sell you what you don’t need. One size fits all = one size fits none.

2)Involvement- make this a group effort, team building...whatever. Participation is everything for the success of the program, and a serious morale booster.

3)Fitness - Nutrition and exercise are a must in any program. Every aspect of physical & mental health and wellness are dependent on good healthy lifestyle habits, nutrition and exercise. A good program (not just somebody pontificating) will show your employees this is easier than they thought.

4)Confidentiality & privacy for those that want it. Often people get lost in a three ring circus. Make sure people feel safe and secure to participate. I have seen programs fail because of this!

5)Implementation: also often missed. We know what we “should” be doing. Show your employees how to implement the program into their hectic lives.

6)Followup: Must be built in from the very start. How do we measure success? How do we ensure continued success?
