When we are younger we think OK...I’ll graduate start working and then I will be ready for the world. As we mature we realize that life is about continuous improvement psychologically, spiritually, socially & intellectually.
Jean Piaget, one of the greatest psychologists of our time, defined the stages of intellectual development. Piaget said that intellectual development controlled every other aspect of development - emotional, social & moral. He said that everyone passes thru an invariant sequence of stages....a person cannot skip stages or reorder them. A central component of Piaget's developmental theory of learning and thinking is that both involve the participation of the learner. Knowledge is not merely transmitted verbally but must be constructed and reconstructed by the learner.
See where I am going? Fitness fits this model as well. I apply Piaget’s brilliant model to our quest for fitness. We all must go through stages in a definite order. This is why fads, trends & tabloid trash do not work in the fitness field. All they do is sell books & magazines. They cause a lot of heart ache, frustration & a sense of failure. Not to mention, they convey really bad advice. There are no “4 weeks to a bikini body” or “magic diets forget the exercise”.
We have to accept that we are each at a certain “stage” of fitness...along a continuum. We have to establish “yes...I want to move forward”. We have to be ready to move from one stage to another. Its not about getting off and on a diet. It is about saying OK..this is where I am....I am ready to do what it takes to move along the continuum. If we stop viewing fitness as “I’m on a diet” to “this is my lifestyle”....that will go a long way to helping us accomplish our goals.
